Hairy Mussel Co has always strived to deliver to the end user, the best product available on the day, fresh as.  Nothing has changed, nine years on this is still our day to day policy and there are certainly times when we are challenged to the max to deliver our promise but very rarely do we not succeed.

We harvest to order, talking to most of our customers at least once a week to keep their orders at a level that best suits their customers needs and maintaining optimum freshness.  Our mussels are supplied from harvesters in and around the Marlborough Sounds, that harvest mussels into 1 ton bags, four times a week.  We then hang that ton bag from a hoist and run them over a belt with water, with four or five pairs of hairy mussel sorting hands to pick out the brokens and oddballs that don’t belong.  We have a packer at the end of the belt, tucking the mussels into poly bins and cardboard boxes depending on the size ordered and their destination.

Our order line birds do a fabulous job getting the orders, invoicing and ticketing and yes, sometimes we have to be a little pushy getting orders pre delivery so we know how much to harvest as we don’t like to disappoint. We always try to harvest enough so as not to run out but not to have too many leftover.

We are passionate about what we do and maintaining our high standards so that you are never disappointed with our product.  Greenshell mussels are a fresh product from the sea and not a processed product in a vacumn bag so even though we pick out the odds and sods, give them a rinse, we can’t polish them up  individually but certainly do our best with what we do.

Our shipping rates are based on just 2 zones – North Island and South Island.
