A new concept in Fresh Live Mussel promotion
The Hairy Mussel “Hotel” is a new innovative concept in “live” mussel display tanks. It’s the first truly “eco friendly” display that requires no power and no water to operate.
It’s available in three distinct models, bench top, free standing or wall configuration. The design allows quick and easy cleaning, ensuring a high standard of hygiene.

Operation
The tank does not use power for water recirculation as it uses the process of condensation cooling from a tray of melting ice above the mussels in the tank.
The tank is filled with mussels (approximately 30kg’s maximum).
The Ice tray is filled with ice. The layer of ice is sprinkled with salt (approximately 150 gram’s of salt per 5kg of ice).
Depending on the temperature, it’s important to keep the Ice tray topped up with ice during the day. (Can be cubed or flaked).
At the end of the day, the Ice tray is filled with Ice (sprinkled with salt). A drain valve at base of tank is opened and any mussel juice waste is removed in to a bucket.
It’s that simple!
Customers
The mussels are easily purchased by customers. A plastic bag, removed from the holder, is hooked over the bar beneath the hatch. The hatch door is opened and the mussels are bundled into the bag using the “claw” attachment.
It’s quick and easy. No more having to pick out mussels one by one, using a tong, like you do with conventional tanks.
Product Quality
Exhaustive testing was performed to ensure the quality of the mussels was maintained. Results showed the maximum shelf life of the mussels in the tank was 6 days.
The all important taste test proved the mussels retained that salty “ocean” taste. The “taste of the ocean” is often “washed out” with conventional water tanks.
Location of Hairy Mussel Hotel
The display tank should not be placed in direct sunlight or against heat-emitting surfaces.
The tank is designed to be operated in ambient temperatures up to 24 degrees Celsius.
